UbuCon Europe: Ubuntu Chooses Malaga

For the first time in its history, UbuCon Europe, the annual Ubuntu community event, is coming to Spain and is being held in Malaga as part of OpenSouthCode 2025. The selection reinforces the city’s status as an open and inclusive technology hub. The Canonical team, the Ubuntu Linux developer, will participate alongside the community to share experiences, knowledge, and success stories.

KDE Spain also announces the holding of Akademy-es 2025 in Malaga, as part of the OpenSouthCode free technology and culture event..

An international program with talks, workshops, and a community for all audiences

The event will bring together national and international leaders from the technology and academic worlds around topics such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, web and software development, cybersecurity, video games, and technological sustainability. l Friday will conclude with the traditional charity networking event, which includes the famous sardine skewers, camperos, Victoria Beers, and a live concert by the musical group Picky Pressure. All proceeds will go to support a free software and social project.

OpenSouthKids: Free technology and culture for children too

On Saturday morning, the 21st, it will be the turn of OpenSouthKids, a day designed to spark technological vocations at an early age. Girls and boys ages 5 to 15 can participate in 12 free activities that combine creativity and technology. Awakening my children’s curiosity about technology is one of the talks designed for parents, and Micro:bit, a small programmable board designed to teach the principles of programming and electronics in a fun and accessible way.

More than an event: community and free knowledge from Malaga to Europe

OpenSouthCode is consolidating its position as a technology festival that celebrates shared knowledge, free culture, and accessible education, thanks to the support of companies such as Canonical Ubuntu, The Workshop, Sector Alarm Tech, Freepik, Ortus Solutions, Slimbook, Spanred Telecomunicaciones, and Deep Computing.

One of this year’s notable new features is FiteBox, an open-source video recorder that allows you to self-record presentations at the touch of a button. It was designed by members of the local community using open-source RISC-V technology. Its name combines the Malaga expression «fite tú» (look at that!) with «box,» which comes from boomboxes, portable radio recorders very popular in the 1980s and in hip-hop culture. FiteBox seeks to foster an accessible, spontaneous, and fun way to capture the knowledge and energy of the event, allowing it to be stored locally or shared on YouTube and social media.
